Brown Appliance and Mattress specializes in service. The family-run business has skilled employees with a knack for helping customers find what’s right for them — whether that’s a new stove, mattress or grill, or servicing one they already have.

“The service sets us apart,” said Trudy Lounder, whose grandfather started the business.

What started out as a small appliance store in 1976 with John Brown, a bookkeeper and one service employee has expanded to a thriving business.

Brown Appliance and Mattress now has more than 50 employees serving customers from Bar Harbor to Bangor and Belfast to Machias, sells more than 30 brands of appliances and mattresses, offers free delivery within a 70-mile radius and services the products it sells.

“What makes us special is our long-time employees. We have a lot of people with a lot of great experience,” Lounder said. Although it is the family’s name on the building, Lounder’s brother Jason Brown echoed her point about crediting their staff.

“The business has been built on the backs of great employees who have worked hard,” Brown said. “And customers like seeing the same face when they come in for their purchases.”
